25 TH ANNIVERSARY MEETING By Barry Russell - Secretary Thank you to all those members and dealers who helped to make the October meeting a resounding success. We now have such a nice venue that the sixty odd people who attended can be readily accommodated at the Union Jack Club. I would like to thank Barbarann for the excellent anniversary cake which not only looked good with the replication of the Player's `Island Queen' cigarette packet, but it also tasted so good that Frank was not able to have any left with his sandwiches in the following week. The free coffee and tea was also well received. Thank you to Terry Maine one of our founder members for cutting the cake. |
We were very pleased to welcome several new members, one of whom said to me that he was used to going to fairs and perhaps seeing two or three packets and he could not believe that so many packets were on offer! We did have 15 tables from which to choose. A good selection of cigarette tins and sweet cigarette packs were also evident.
The special auction with `must have' packs was very well attended and bids were strong. Indeed the realisations broke the £1000 barrier which had not happened before. Frank Smith our auctioneer even received a round of applause at the conclusion of the auction.
The Committee does work hard to ensure that matters run smoothly and I thank them for their support.
What a pity that our national rail system does its level best to deter customers travelling over the weekend. I have much sympathy with those members who have to leave at 12.15 p.m. to catch their last train home, not to mention that ridiculous fare structure.
